Hey there, and welcome back to the Optimize Health podcast. I’m Doctor Chang from Optimize Health Chiropractic Center here in Miami Lakes, and today I want to talk about something you use every single second of every day but probably don’t think much about — your spine.

Now, here’s the thing. Most people only start thinking about their spine when something goes wrong. But understanding how it’s built and how it’s supposed to work? That can actually help you take better care of it before problems start. So let me walk you through the basics.

Your spine is made up of twenty-four movable bones called vertebrae, plus your sacrum and tailbone at the bottom. These bones stack on top of each other like building blocks, but here’s what makes it amazing — there are soft cushions between them called discs. Think of these discs like little shock absorbers. They’re filled with a gel-like center that helps distribute pressure when you move, bend, or lift things.

Now, when you look at the spine from the side, it’s not straight like a pole. It has natural curves — kind of like a gentle S shape. You’ve got a curve in your neck, another one in your mid back, and one more in your lower back. These curves aren’t random. They’re designed to help absorb shock and distribute your body weight evenly. When these curves are in good alignment, your spine is strong and efficient.

Here’s where it gets really interesting. Running through the center of all these bones is your spinal cord — the main highway of nerves connecting your brain to every part of your body. Your organs, your muscles, your skin — everything gets signals through this system. That’s why we chiropractors care so much about spinal alignment. When vertebrae aren’t moving properly or they’re out of position, it can irritate those nerves and affect how your body functions.

So what does this mean for you? Well, that curve in your neck — we call it the cervical curve — it’s supposed to have a gentle C shape. But you know what I see all the time here in Miami Lakes? People looking down at their phones for hours. That forward head posture flattens out that curve and puts extra strain on the muscles and discs. Over time, that adds up.

Your lower back, or lumbar spine, is designed to be stable but also mobile. It handles a lot of stress, especially if you sit most of the day or do heavy lifting. When those joints get stiff or misaligned, that’s when you start feeling that nagging lower back pain.

So here’s what you can do starting today. Pay attention to your posture. When you’re sitting, try to keep your ears over your shoulders and your shoulders over your hips. Take breaks from sitting every thirty to forty-five minutes — just stand up, move around, let your spine reset.

And here’s another thing — stay active. Walking, swimming, gentle stretching — these all help keep your spine mobile and healthy. Your spine is designed to move. When it doesn’t, problems start creeping in.

Now, if you’re dealing with pain, stiffness, or you just feel like something’s off, that’s when it’s time to get checked. We can evaluate how your spine is moving, identify areas that need attention, and create a plan to get you feeling better. You don’t have to wait until it’s unbearable.

Listen, your spine is the foundation for everything you do. Taking care of it now means staying active and healthy for years to come.
